Our Trustees

Leading with purpose and integrity

The Board of Trustees plays a key role in guiding the work of Nightingale House Hospice. They help ensure we’re well governed, focused, and heading in the right direction when it comes to patient care and funding.

Bringing together a wealth of skills and experience, from medicine and general practice to business, finance, governance, IT, and law, our Trustees generously give their time as volunteers, sharing their knowledge and expertise to support the hospice and the people we care for.

His professional background includes an impressive 42 year career in the banking sector, where he held a range of senior roles across different areas of the industry. This extensive experience has equipped Chris with invaluable leadership, strategic planning, and financial management skills, all of which play a vital role in helping to guide the hospice through an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

Chris is passionate about ensuring that Nightingale House continues to grow, adapt, and deliver exceptional care to patients and their families, always putting their needs at the centre of every decision.

Dr Neil Braid - Vice Chair and Chair of Finance Committee

Neil is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees at Nightingale House Hospice and also serves as Chair of the Finance Committee. A retired GP and former partner in a busy local practice, Neil brings decades of frontline medical experience and a deep understanding of patient care to his role.

Since joining the Board in 2012, Neil has been a dedicated advocate for clinical excellence and financial sustainability. His medical background, combined with a strong grasp of governance and resource planning, ensures that both clinical and financial decisions are aligned with the hospice’s mission and long term goals.

Working closely with the Chair of the Board and the hospice’s CEO, Neil plays a key role in supporting strategic oversight and helping to shape a responsive, compassionate future for Nightingale House.

Dr Jenny Duguid - Chair of the Clinical Committee

Jenny is Chair of the Clinical Committee at Nightingale House Hospice. A retired consultant haematologist, Jen brings a wealth of specialist clinical expertise and a deep commitment to patient-centred care. Her extensive experience within the NHS enables her to provide valuable insight into the complexities of delivering high quality hospice services.

In addition to her role at Nightingale House, Jenny also serves as a Trustee of the Shooting Star Cancer Services charity at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, further strengthening her connection to local healthcare services and her understanding of the wider care landscape.

Jen plays a vital role in ensuring clinical excellence across the hospice, supporting the Board with guidance on best practice, quality standards, and the complex and changing needs of patients and their families.

His Honour Philip Hughes - Chair of the HR Committee

Philip joined the Board of Trustees at Nightingale House ten years ago, following his retirement, and is the current Chair of the HR Committee. During his career as a Circuit Judge, he presided over Crime, Family and Civil cases, and held positions including Designated Family Judge, Diversity and Community Relations Liaison Judge for North Wales, and North Wales representative on the Council of H.M. Circuit Judges.

Philip is an Honorary Fellow of Wrexham University, where he also served on the Board of Governors.

Outside of his professional life, Philip enjoys sailing, gardening, singing, and cycling around the Scottish islands.

Peter Weston - Chair of the Governance Committee

Peter is Chair of the Governance Committee at Nightingale House Hospice, bringing extensive experience in strategic planning, risk management, and service improvement. After moving to North Wales in 1971, Peter built a distinguished career in education and local government, spending over 30 years advising County Councils in North East Wales. His roles included leading multi-functional teams, managing performance and risk, and overseeing major projects related to knowledge services, ICT, and school improvement.

Following early retirement, Peter founded his own consultancy, where he continues to advise on technology use in education and manages large-scale software implementation projects.

In his role as Chair of the Governance Committee, Peter applies his broad expertise to ensure strong governance, accountability, and transparency, helping Nightingale House provide safe, effective, and well managed care to patients and their families.

Alison Brebner - Chair of the Income Generation Committee

Alison has been a Trustee at Nightingale House Hospice since 2018 and currently serves as Chair of both the Income Generation Committee and the Lottery Sub-Committee.

Before retiring, Alison had a distinguished legal career as a solicitor with a well established law firm in Wrexham, where she progressed to become Managing Director. Her legal and leadership experience brings a strong governance perspective to the Board, along with valuable insight into risk management, strategic planning, and compliance.

Alison is passionate about ensuring the hospice continues to grow its income streams and remain financially resilient, enabling it to provide outstanding care to patients and their families now and in the future.

Joan Lowe

Joan joined the Board of Trustees at Nightingale House in 2000, having first supported the hospice during her year as Mayor of Wrexham in 2007/08. She has since served on the Fundraising Committee and now also gives her time as a volunteer.

With a background in early years childcare and many years as a Wrexham County Councillor, Joan focused on education, health, and adult social care.

Eluned Griffiths

Eluned is originally from a small, rural, Welsh speaking village in West Wales, known for its famous rugby players, an early influence on her lifelong passion for the sport. After university, she moved to Wrexham to lecture at Cartrefle Teacher Training College. She later became a department head in secondary schools in Chester and Clwyd and served as a member of the WJEC Biological Panel in Cardiff.

In 1990, Eluned was granted leave to care for her mother during the final months of her terminal cancer. With very little medical or palliative support available at the time, this experience left a lasting impression on her. On returning to Wrexham, she was invited to join the Wrexham Hospice and Cancer Support Committee. Within three years, Nightingale House Hospice opened its doors, and she has been closely involved ever since, as a volunteer Trustee, Chair of Fundraising (later Income Generation), and Chair of the Board.

It has been a privilege for Eluned to contribute to the growth and development of Nightingale House. Firsthand experience has shown her the vital importance of excellent palliative care for patients, carers, and families. Having faced a life-limiting illness in her teens, she also understands that hospice care must go beyond clinical treatment. She is proud of the comprehensive support offered by Nightingale House, from the dedicated Family Support Team to the many other services delivered by staff, volunteers, and Trustees.

Outside the hospice, Eluned’s interests include running a smallholding, breeding and showing Great Danes, captaining squash and tennis teams, playing the piano, and more recently, bridge and pickleball.

Dr Ian Happs

Ian is a retired local GP and Trustee at Nightingale House Hospice, bringing over three decades of experience in community healthcare to the Board. He spent 30 years working in the Wrexham area, primarily as a Partner at Alyn Family Doctors, serving the communities of Llay, Rossett, and Gresford.

Originally from near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, Ian trained at Sheffield Medical School before moving to Warrington and eventually settling in Wrexham in 1989. Alongside his clinical work, he served as Programme Director for the local GP training scheme for 21 years, supporting the next generation of family doctors until stepping down in April 2025.

Having known Nightingale House through both his clinical and educational roles, Ian is proud to now support the hospice as a Trustee. He is passionate about Global Health and currently serves as GP Lead for Global Health Placements in Wales, helping to create meaningful opportunities for learning and collaboration in healthcare worldwide.

Richard Thomas

Richard is a practising solicitor. Born in Wrexham, Richard wanted to give something back and Nightingale House was his first choice organisation to assist. Dealing with dispute resolution and litigation, Richard hopes not to have to use his professional skills to help Nightingale House too often! Having co-founded the law firm DTM Legal and undertaken roles in finance, IT, business support, regulatory and compliance, Richard hopes he has other skills that will be of use.

Richard was previously chair of the North Wales Chamber of Commerce and has been heavily involved in promoting North Wales’ economic development. Richard is also a non-executive director of Merseyside Special Investment Fund Limited.

Richard’s interests include supporting the Welsh rugby team, which is now effectively more charity work, he says. And when the opportunity arises, he enjoys riding his motorbike around the beautiful North Wales countryside.

Rob Cole

Rob has been a dedicated Trustee of Nightingale House Hospice for the past nine years, contributing his expertise across several committees, including Finance, Income Generation and Strategy. In addition to his role as a Trustee, Rob also serves as the hospice’s Finance Director, bringing significant financial leadership and strategic oversight to the organisation. His commitment is deeply personal, having seen first hand the care and support provided to family members and friends who have accessed hospice services.

A qualified accountant since 1994, Rob has held Finance Director roles since the late 1990s across a range of healthcare businesses, including retail and wholesale pharmacy and weight loss clinics. His extensive experience in healthcare finance provides valuable insight and stability to the Board.

Outside of his professional and Trustee roles, Rob is an avid sports fan with a particular passion for rugby and football.

“Our forward thinking Board of Trustees is committed to reviewing our strategic plan to ensure we’re always progressing and exploring opportunities to expand our services. Patients and their families remain at the heart of every conversation and decision, guiding how we shape the future of the hospice to meet their evolving needs.”
