About Nightingale House

Nightingale House provides specialist palliative care services, to patients and their families across a wide area stretching from Wrexham, Flintshire, East Denbighshire to Barmouth and the border towns including Oswestry and Whitchurch.

These services include a 16 bed inpatient ward, a day care unit caring for up to 15 patients each day, an outpatient clinic, occupational therapy, complementary therapies, physiotherapy including a hydrotherapy pool, an ambulance service as well as a range of bereavement support services such as Release, a specialist service for children and young adults. All services are provided free of charge to patients and families.

Specialist Palliative Care

Specialist palliative care is the total active care of patients with advancing, non-curable disease and limited prognosis and their families, by a multi-professional team who have undergone recognised specialist palliative care training. The Support provided is holistic and encompasses physical, psychological, social and spiritual support. It involves practitioners with a broad mix of skills including medical and nursing care, social work, pastoral/spiritual care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pharmacy.
Inpatient and day care services

The Inpatient Unit provides 24-hour specialist care in a homely and friendly environment. Patients may be admitted for symptom control, assessment and palliative rehabilitation or in the last days or weeks of life. Day Care provides an opportunity for patients with life limiting illnesses to get together in comfortable and caring surroundings, and is also an access point to other specialist palliative care services that the hospice provides. A multi-professional team of staff provides care, including nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, complementary therapists, occupational therapist and social workers supported by housekeeping, administrative support, maintenance and catering team as well as a team of volunteers.
Out patient clinics

The hospice offers follow-up support and continues to monitor patients’ symptoms and how they are able to cope at home through the provision of a medical outpatient clinic service. The clinics run three days each week but frequency of clinics can be responsive to local need.

Pastoral and Spiritual Care

The team of pastoral carers provide help and support to patients, visitors, staff and volunteers by providing a listening ear and a supportive voice. They can also help to arrange for the patient’s religious needs to be met.
Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy

There are many symptoms that can be helped or managed with physiotherapy intervention. These include breathlessness, pain, weakness, stiffness and lack of mobility. Physiotherapists can provide advice, exercise programmes, physical forms of pain relief (e.g. acupuncture) and help with mobility. They can also advise carers on how best to help.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapist will assess the needs of the individual and their carers, taking into account all the physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of their lives.

Diversional / complementary therapies

Patients are able to access a broad range of diversional and complementary therapies at the hospice.

Family Support Services

SOCIAL WORK SERVICE – Social workers are available to assist, support and advise patients and their families on a range of issues including practical, financial and emotional matters.

BEREAVEMENT SERVICE – Bereavement support is offered to relatives following the loss of a loved one cared for by Nightingale House. There are also support groups to enable bereaved people to meet and help each other.

RELEASE – Bereavement Support for Children and Young People. We can provide bereavement support for any child who has experienced the death of a loved one. We also support children living with a loved one who is very ill. This is a flexible service which will meet the needs of children and families.



This process does not normally involve a physical examination. A questionnaire will be sent to the successful candidate. This must be completed and forwarded to Occupational Health. The candidate must be declared fit before commencing employment.

Qualifications / Professional Qualifications

Appointments are offered subject to the successful candidate providing evidence of professional qualification(s) and continuing professional registration.


All offers of employment are subject to the receipt of two references that are satisfactory to the Hospice.

Contract – Notice Period

1 week’s notice is required, from either party, during the probationary period and 4 weeks thereafter.

Probationary Period

Appointments for all staff are subject to a 6 month probationary period.



Nightingale House Hospice will normally pay a contribution of 4% of salary into your private pension if you have one. Entry into the NHS pension for clinical staff is subject to set criteria. Please contact the HR department for further details.

Life Insurance cover

Death in Service Life Insurance Cover equivalent to two times basic salary for all staff who are not covered by the NHS Superannuation Scheme.


25 days per year plus 8 Bank Holidays for full time staff, (pro rata for part time hours). This increases every 2 years to a maximum of 32 days plus Bank Holidays after 10 years service, subject to Holiday policy.
Sick pay

In the first year of service up to 5 contractual sick days then SSP
In the second year of service, up to 10 contractual sick days then SSP
From the third year of service, up to 26 weeks contractual sick pay and up to 26 weeks contractual half pay, both including SSP. The above is pro rata for part time staff.
Bank Holiday

A £25.00 additional payment is made when working whole or part of Bank Holidays. This payment is only for staff who are required to work on the Bank Holiday e.g. inpatients, kitchen, housekeeping.
Child care salary sacrifice scheme

Nightingale House Hospice operates the above scheme in conjunction with Computershare Voucher Services. Child care vouchers are an employee benefit available to all eligible parents.
