Some people will come to NHH to die, however patients come for other reasons. For example, a period of assessment, symptom management such as pain, and nausea and for support for themselves and their families for psychological distress.
Duration of stay is based on an individual’s assessment and their needs, however we are not a long stay care environment.
Where possible we support/co-ordinate safe discharges to a patient’s preferred place of care.
People living with complex problems associated with life limiting conditions. Following receipt of referral, people will be offered an outpatient appointment for assessment of their needs, and offered the opportunity to access appropriate services to meet those needs.
People attend usually one day a week from approximately 10-3pm for an initial period of 6-8 weeks. Services and support will be offered from a multidisciplinary team with the aim of working towards patients individual goals. Carer assessment and support is also offered.
Referral is usually via the health professionals involved in your care e.g. general practitioner, district nurse, nurse specialist, Macmillan nurses, internal referrals from other hospice teams or self-referral through Drop-In.
Assessment by a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist. Various treatment options will be discussed and planned such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, advice on managing symptoms such as pain, sweats and mobility problems. The overall aim is to help people achieve their individualised goals and improve quality of life.
People diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Patients can attend as an outpatient or be assessed and attend when an inpatient or from the day services department.
We accept referrals from any healthcare professional involved with your care. They usually either complete a referral form or provide a letter with details about you and your problems.
FAMILY SUPPORT TEAM
We work holistically, considering practical, emotional, spiritual and social needs, as well as offering support to patients and their family and friends.
Child bereavement support is offered to children and young people up to the age of 19 years (no prior connection with NHH is required). For all other services not linked to child bereavement, the individual must be known to our hospice services.
All bereavement support sessions are tailored to the needs of the individual and may include one to one sessions or group activities. Sessions could entail the creation of memory books, discussions, listening, sharing experiences and developing coping strategies; signposting where appropriate.
Befriending services are groups of individuals within a small community (village or town) who volunteer some of their time each week to keep in touch with someone in their local community who might be isolated or lonely.
First steps are to complete an application form, provide contact details of two people who can be contacted to give you a reference and provide the documents required to complete a DBS check. (Disclosure and barring service – previously known as a police check).
Currently, there are befriending service running in Llandderfel, Llangollen and Coedpoeth. We also have heart failure befrienders who work with groups around the community and a group of Wrexham based befrienders linked to the hospice.
The Lottery starts from only £1 per week and the preferred method of payment is by standing order.

In 2019 it will cost £3,140,383 to run Nightingale House Hospice with just under 20% coming from statutory sources. The remaining 80% comes from our valued community.
We raise the money needed by a number of vital income streams. We raise funds through our retail outlets across North East Wales and Shropshire, the Nightingale House Lottery, Grants and Trusts and our extensive fundraising efforts out in the community. We organise numerous fundraising events and campaigns throughout the year. We also work closely with local community groups, businesses and individuals to help generate funds for patient care. We receive gifts in wills and donations in memory of loved ones. Not to forget our collection tins, buckets and home money cubes that generate over £70,000 each year.
We have a specific area next to our main reception at the Hospice which is known as our ‘Supporter Hub’.

We will accept most donations at all of our shops. For furniture or large items, we advise ringing your local shop first. Please do not drop off items when the shop is closed.
We have specialist trained staff, to ensure we provide high-quality care to meet patients needs and support those closest to them.
Nightingale House Hospice and Cancer Support Centre Foundation was founded in 1986 when we started delivering day services based in ‘Nightingale Ward’ at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The idea for the hospice came from Dr Graham Arthurs, a consultant anaesthetist who was interested in pain management. He brought together a group of people who started to raise funds to deliver the service.
The hospice is a registered charity, 80% of our funding comes from the local community within our catchment area.
