Why volunteer?

Volunteers in daycare

“I enjoy helping people and making new friends”

“To fill a gap after retirement and to feel useful”

“I get a lot out of volunteering”

Volunteering describes what people decide to do with their spare time, without pay, that benefits others and contributes to services in the community. At Nightingale House Hospice, volunteers provide a range of skills and experience to help provide the highest standard of care to our patients and their families. Everyone between the ages of 16 and 75 years old can volunteer at Nightingale House Hospice.

In the wider community, volunteers contribute time to fundraising in the events arranged throughout the year.

It’s not just what you contribute that matters. When you volunteer you will meet new people, make new friends, learn new skills and become a valued member of the team. Thank you for applying to become a volunteer at Nightingale House Hospice

Opportunities to Volunteer

Inpatient Unit

This includes providing a service to patients and their visitors with tasks such as making drinks, helping to serve meals and keeping ward areas tidy. Sitting with patients and talking or reading with them if they would like is also part of the role.

Reception desk

We aim to cover the main reception area seven days a week with shifts available morning, afternoon and evening. Duties include answering the telephone, welcoming visitors and directing them appropriately, taking messages, maintaining the visitors book and selling goods and merchandise from our small shop.

Day Unit

Volunteers help with general tasks, talking with patients and serving meals. Volunteers also provide craft activities, beauty therapies and hairdressing services.

Drivers

Volunteers drivers transport patients to and from the Daycare Unit. More opportunities exist for drivers within the Income Generation Department to collect and deliver collection boxes throughout the community.

Hospice shops and Distribution Centre

All our retail outlets sell donated clothes, bric-a-brac and furniture. The shops raise vital funds for Nightingale House Hospice. Volunteering in the shops is a great way to learn retailing skills and can really enhance future job prospects.

Income Generation

The Income Generation Department ensures that our running costs are met in order that the service which the hospice provides to local people can continue. Involvement in this department covers a wide variety of roles including distribution of the Hospice newsletter and general admin duties.

Roles also include taking part in any of the numerous events organised by the department and provide a great way to meet new people and make new friends. The roles are very flexible and often require relatively short periods of time, making these ideal opportunities for people to contribute their time on an as-and-when basis.
